Three design trends for 2024
There are new trends every year — including in design. So what are the trends for this year?
3D & maximalism
It should be loud & colorful!
- Vivid colors and color gradients
Maximalism dispenses with muted pastel shades and uses rich colors, neon accents and eye-catching color gradients. Ignite the effect of tropical sunsets, candy-colored dreamscapes and anything that makes your eyes dance. - Playful patterns
From classic flowers and stripes to unexpected geometric shapes and abstract swirls, patterns are very popular right now. Don't be afraid to mix and match them to create a kaleidoscope of visual interest. - Fully coated typography
Make way, Helvetica! Maximalism means that weird fonts, dynamic layouts, and playful text animations are all welcome. Let your words dance, scream, and whisper and tell your story in a way that traditional typography simply can't. - Impressive experiences
Maximalism includes not only aesthetics but also the creation of interactive and engaging experiences. 3D elements, animations, micro-interactions and even AR/VR integrations play a role in taking users into a fascinating world.
minimalism
The opposite trend to the 3D & maximalism trend persists
- Distinctive yet simple fonts
Typography plays an important role on a minimalistic website. Because fonts that stand alone should be unique, rare, and appealing. They must be able to capture the user's attention right away — whether with bold and interesting shapes or with clean, sharp lines. With a minimalistic design, it's important to avoid neutral or unobtrusive styles. - Neutral and balanced colors
The design can be made lively and eye-catching, but bright colors should be used with care. A colorful element on a neutral background automatically attracts attention and can unintentionally become the focus of the design. It is therefore important to use bright accents in a targeted manner, for example to highlight a call-to-action button or important information. - white space
The battle between minimalism and maximalism presents web designers with another challenge, namely white space. White space is the empty space on the page that makes it easier for you to direct the user's gaze. Similar to strategic coloring, using white space can help highlight important information and even increase conversion rates
Nostalgia & Y2K
It's getting retro!
- Free font design with italics and standard fonts
Fonts like Times New Roman and Comic Sans are no longer taboo with this trend! Blocky text and speech bubble letters. 3D effects and loud, bold fonts with thick outlines and shadows. - Icons and visuals
Low-resolution images, decorative 3D icons and clip-art style stickers are used. Flashy emojis from before emojis became mainstream are used:) - Unusual retro color insert
It uses metallic shades such as silver and gray, as well as icy shades of blue and purple. Neon colors and bright retro colors such as orange and lime green are no longer uncommon. Nostalgia & Y2K designs thrive on their unusual color combinations, color gradients and color contrasts
What is important is:
Trends are cool to test, but they're not always right for your brand! Branding expertise is definitely required here!
